The Singer Model 20 was a working miniature sewing machine and was introduced in 1910. It was a simple machine producing a chain stitch and Singer advertised it as "not a toy but a real sewing machine".
There were four versions of this machine which all look very similar:
the first produced from 1910 - 1914 had a four spoke hand wheel,
the second had a seven spoke hand wheel and was produced from c1914 - c1926,
the third version produced from 1926 to c1934 had numbers stamped on the machine to guide threading.
then in the 1970's Singer reintroduced the Singer 20 as a collectors item almost identical to the last version
The fifth incarnation was the 20-10 Sewhandy which looks very different. Introduced in the 1950's it was a complete makeover of the original design with most moving parts enclosed in metal casings.
Model 20
This is an example of the third version of the Model 20 with numbers indicating the threading route so was made around 1926/1930.
There are numbers stamped on the machine to aid threading which I've replicated in white just under the original.
The machine takes a 24 x 1 needle which threads left to right.
The hand wheel has seven spokes and has arrows cast into the steel to indicate the direction to turn the hand wheel.
The rear of the machine has the Singer Trade Mark with U.S.A. underneath.
The original green felt to the base of the machine has faded considerably.
Model 20
This is an example of the 1970's reproduction of the Model 20 made in Turkey and designated the K-20. Although it is almost identical to the earlier version there are several aspects that make it relatively easily identifible the two most notable are;
1. instead of nickel plating chrome was used for the brightwork
2. the hand wheel casting is not as cleanly detailed as the original - the arrows are not as crisp and the wooden handle does not fit snuggly to the wheel.
The rear of the machine has the Singer Trade Mark with U.S.A. underneath.
This machine came complete with clamp, instructions and three needles. It also has it's original box unfortunately the box's artwork has faded on a couple of its sides.
